WHy birth photography?

The birth of my first daughter is a blur to me. She came fast but with some complications, and it almost ended in an emergency c-section. I don’t remember much about the experience and the first photos I have are from an hour after her birth. I wish I had more photos.

My emotions from that time can only be felt through my memories. It’s been 14 years and those memories are fading.

When my second daughter was about to be born I realized what I had missed with my first birth experience, so I asked a friend to be there to photograph it. Those images are my most cherished photos. I am not sure if having it documented was the only reason, but the whole experience was so much more positive for me.

I am now an advocate for documenting the experience of birth, and for giving birthing parents the strength to embrace the experience. Because this is the beginning of your baby’s life and your life as a parent. Birth can be scary, messy and chaotic, but it is also so beautiful, and it deserves to be documented. We deserve to be able to look back on it and remember.

In addition to being an experienced birth photographer, I am also a certified full spectrum doula. If you choose, you can take advantage of my support services before, during and/or after your birth. No matter what kind of birth you are planning - home or hospital, natural or medicated - I am here to support you through the whole experience.

I offer birth photography or doula support alone as well as birth photography + doula support and postpartum support as well.

FAQs

Why should I hire a birth photographer?

Birth is not just an obstacle to overcome to get to your baby. It should be documented and celebrated. The experience of birth can often go by in a blur of pain, but looking back on it can remind you of your strength. As the years go by, you will want to look back on the experience and remember the beauty of it all.

When will you be on call and how long will you stay?

I will be on-call 24 hours a day from 38 weeks gestation until delivery. You can call or text me anytime, and you’ll have to let me know as soon as you are in labour so we can decide together when its best for me to come to you. I will be there through labour, delivery and for 1-3 hours after to document all the details of you getting to know your new baby.

What types of births do you photograph?

All births are amazing and can be documented! Keep in mind there are some differences though. A home birth allows me to come and go anytime and document anything you are comfortable with. During a hospital birth I am limited to the guidelines of the facility. I will do my best to communicate with the midwives and/or doctors involved in your birth.

What if myself or my partner are uncomfortable having a stranger in the room?

I want to make sure you are as comfortable as possible, so that is why we meet before your birth to get to know each other I am experienced in birth (both my own two and attending others) and have done a lot of training in what births can be like, so you can be assured that I am comfortable with anything that can happen. I will also be as discreet as possible during the birth.

What if you get sick or have another client in labour at the same time as me?

It is extremely important for me to be sure that you are left without your photography or doula. I will have a backup in place for either or both services in the event that I can’t be there for you. The birth community is so amazing and are there for each other in situations like that.

Will you share our photos on social media? What if we don’t want you to?

That is completely up to you. I understand that these are very personal images and I will only share what you are comfortable with me sharing. I will let you choose after seeing your gallery and giving me written consent by signing a model release included in your contract. . That being said, I would be honoured if you would allow me to share the beauty of your birth.

What if our situation/birth plans change? What if there is an emergency?

I understand that birth is unpredictable, and I am happy to adapt to any changes to your plan. The priority is always the health and safety of you and your baby. I will consult with your caregivers and make decisions to photograph based on their recommendations and your unique situation. I can leave the room anytime you ask and will continue to be available to you for the duration of your birth.

How do you balance being a doula and taking photos at the same time?

When I attended births as just a photographer, I found myself wanting to do more. There are times when I was not taking photos and during those time I tended to become a support for my client without even trying to. With my doula training, I am able to prioritize what my clients need most at any time. My experience as a photographer allows me to always be watching for important moments.

Why should I hire a doula?

I believe you can never have to too much support when it comes to birth. A doula is a non-medical support person who can provide you with information, resources, encouragement and so much more during your birth. I will support you and your partner through the whole experience, holding your hand, answering questions and being a general helper when needed.
