The birth of Elowyn | Fredericton birth photographer

Elowyn came into the world so quickly, I didn’t make it for her appearance. Which is hard to believe considering I live across the street!

Being able to be present for this birth meant so much to me. Taylor is my friend and neighbour and I’ve watched her throughout her pregnancy prepare for this day.

Taylor wanted so badly to have her fourth baby girl at home. She dreamed of a quiet home birth without the stress of getting to the hospital. Her dream came true and the amazing New Brunswick Midwives were there to give her the peaceful experience she had hoped for.

It all happened so fast that they forgot to call me before miss Elowyn arrived. When I got there, Taylor was resting quietly in the birthing pool in her kitchen with baby Ellie on her chest, still attached by her umbilical cord.

I was blown away by how chill everyone was (though I can’t speak for dad, he may have been freaking out a bit inside!) The midwives were doing their thing while mom and baby had skin to skin in the pool. I snapped away, secretly wishing my births had been like this!

Everything about this birth was so relaxed. From delivering the placenta (and then getting a closer look at it - so cool!) to getting out of the pool and nursing for the first time, there was no rushing.

This birth made me even more confident that I want to be a birth photographer. Seeing a baby in the minutes after birth is so incredible. And seeing a mother feel empowered to made decisions for herself and her baby was even more amazing.
