Week 33, People | 2015 Project 52

“As our hairdresser, Doreen gave both our girls their first haircuts. Sofia went from having to sit on daddy’s lap to eagerly jumping into the chair each time. But Doreen has been more than just someone who cuts our hair. She is our friend and Sofia looks up to her. There was no other person Sofia would have allowed to chop off 10 inches of hair, except “People Dee Dee” as she calls her.

She is moving away next month, and we are going to miss her. But hopefully, we’ll stay friends for a long long time.

‘Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for a while, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same.’ ~ Flavia Weedn”

These are the kinds of photos that not many people have. Most people – including me – would probably have their cell phone out, but this time I took the opportunity to really document it all. I wanted to remember all the little details, from the giddy smile on Sofia’s face to the very first snip to those bundles of hair sitting on the counter.

For me, these images tell a story. They tell me that my little girl is growing up, that she made this big decision all by herself and that we have a very good friend in Doreen.

So having cell phone shots of this would have been just fine, but this collection of photographs are so much more to me. The light in the salon is not great, so being able to use my DSLR meant getting much better quality shots. Converting them to black and white takes away all the distractions and brings focus to the moment, the emotion.

I would LOVE to do sessions like this for my clients. There is absolutely no reason why I couldn’t tag along with you to document milestones like this, big or small. I really truly believe that it is the everyday REAL moments like this that are most important in life. And that is why I put so much into documenting my own family’s every day.

If you would like to book a lifestyle session of any type with me, contact me for more information. I would love to chat with you about the kinds of photos that will mean a lot to you and your family.
