Looking back at 2017 | Client work | New Brunswick Lifestyle Photographer

January 2, 2018

2017 was quite a year for Jennifer Blake Photography. There were a lot of ups and many downs, but I came out of it at the end a better photographer with a whole lot of amazing experiences behind me. I got to work with some incredible families, and create beautiful work that I am so proud of. I hope I was able to preserve their memories for them in a way that they love.

At the beginning of the year I set a goal to shoot more of what brings me joy. That meant stepping back from weddings and posed family sessions and focusing on shooting lifestyle and documentary. I did some in-home sessions and began shooting in a more relaxed way, capturing moments and details and looking for light. I enrolled in workshops and joined groups where I can learn to be better at photographing real moments, and find myself in the process. I also taught some photography basics workshops, which was totally new for me.

I shot a couple weddings, and they were so wonderful. Even as I moved away from them, I loved being a part of such a special day for these couples and finding my own style.

I also worked with some pretty amazing grads. I did an epic casual session that I still think about, and found myself falling in love with doing grad sessions even though they are so different from the rest of my work. It’s fun doing things that challenge you and inspire you to be better.

The biggest thing that happened for my business this year was moving to New Brunswick. I won’t lie, it hasn’t been easy starting over. I am working hard to find new clients who trust in my vision and skills. I am using this opportunity to really focus on lifestyle shooting, and I’ve been lucky to have been able to find some clients who have embraced it. I had a model call and got a huge response. The sessions that came out of it were so great, I met wonderful people and got to do what I do best. I have fallen in love with New Brunswick and its beautiful locations.

New Year, New Me

As I go forward in 2018, I want to do more of that. I want to explore and go on adventures. I hope I can find more clients who see the value in documenting their everyday lives, at home or places that mean something to them. I’ve completely stepped away from weddings so I can truly focus on my lifestyle work. My heart is in this, working with families and children.

Here are some of my favourite shots from 2017 sessions and weddings. It was hard choosing just one shot from each one! I’m so proud of everything I’ve done this year. Thank you for following along and supporting me!
