Family of three | Riverside Mini Sessions | Oromocto Lifestyle Photographer

October 23, 2018

One thing I have noticed since starting my photography business is that people get fewer photos taken as their children grow older. That’s one reason why I was so thrilled when this family of three booked a Riverside Mini Session with me in September.

It’s not often that I get to work with families with older children, and especially with one child. There are probably a few reasons for this. As kids grow up they sometimes dislike being the center of attention. Maybe they don’t like having their photo taken. With younger kids and toddlers it’s easy for me to engage or even just follow them around as they play. Older kids need to get doing something and that’s a lot harder for them.

But I believe it’s important to continue documenting your kids as they get older. Even if that means keeping it really simple with portraits. You should use these photos to capture their personalities, their charisma, their curiosity.

The girl with the blonde hair

Marley was a wonderful girl to work with. She loved having her photo taken, which made my job easier of course. But she also loved exploring, telling stories, and showing off for the camera. I loved hearing her ideas for shots and seeing where she would go next. She is funny and bright and beautiful.

And because I don’t get to work with kids that age often, it was extra fun for me. She was open to my ideas and wanted to be involved. And she showed her parents lots of love, which was the best part of all.

If you have older kids, don’t stop taking their photos. You might not be able to get them to do a professional session, but you should still get them in front of the camera. Growing up is so amazing and strange and fleeting. You – and they – deserve to have their lives documented.

I love doing this Riverside Mini Session so much, and I think Marley did too.
