For those who don’t know, before I started my photography business I was a journalist. I worked a weekly newspaper in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan. That’s where I really started to love photography.
But what does that have to do with a newborn baby boy? Well, I have to go back a bit to explain that. My boss at the Meadow Lake Progress became more like a family to me than a boss. Donna took me under her wings right from the start, when my then-boyfriend and I (and our cat) drove from Halifax to Saskatchewan in November 2006. She made me call along the way and let her know we were ok. I knew even then that she would be more than just the publisher of the newspaper I worked at.
In the three and a half years that we lived in Meadow Lake, we became close with Donna and Brian and their whole family. They invited us over for supper, we spent holidays with them and visited their cabin at the lake. When we moved to Rosetown, we kept in touch and I still call Donna my Meadow Lake Mom.
So when her daughter Jerri had a baby and they asked me to take some photos of him, of course, I was thrilled. Not only did that mean I got to spend a long weekend at Turtle Lake with them, but I got to do some lifestyle newborn photos, which is something I don’t get to do nearly enough.
Baby Brian (named after his poppy), was so sweet. He lay in his bassinet by the window overlooking the lake and was so peaceful. It was so special for me to be able to do this for them. And it just proves that family doesn’t have to be blood, it can be whoever is there for you and close to you, and we are lucky to have found some pretty awesome family here in Saskatchewan <3
