This is another lifestyle session I did in the fall, and it was so much fun. I was invited into the Wickett family’s home to capture some photos of them, and it ended up being a fun and relaxed session and we made some great memories.

One of the biggest challenges I come across as a family photographer is getting kids to enjoy having their photos taken. It’s a well known fact that when a camera is present, children will look in every direction except where the person with the camera is. It is my job to find ways to capture their personalities and get great photos anyway. I accept this challenge with open arms, and I am happy to say that I haven’t had a session yet in which I haven’t been able to do that.

As parents, we all want our kids to sit and smile perfectly for the camera, but that is not easy and in my opinion it doesn’t necessarily make the best photos. My favourite images are the ones where children are being themselves, lost in thought or play, showing their personality. So when we were having trouble getting these guys to sit still and cooperate, I pulled out all my tricks, and I got mom and dad to pull out some toys. It worked like a charm and I love the photos that came out of it.

During any session, I am always looking for moments. I have my camera ready to catch a laugh or a smile, a meaningful interaction. It’s those in-between shots that sometimes turn out the best. And no, the kids aren’t always looking at the camera. But that’s ok because they are being themselves and are relaxed and that makes for great shots.

I’ll say it again, in-home lifestyle sessions are becoming my favourite type of session because they are real. And who wants photos that are not truly representative of your family? I love this session and I hope you enjoy it too :)

This is fantastic. So much joy and love. I especially love the images of grandma playing and laughing with the kids. You are so great at these in-home sessions!
