This month I wanted to challenge myself to do something I’ve never done before. I took my camera out in the morning and shot at least one photo every hour throughout the day. It was a kind of Day in the Life (although I had to go out that night so I only did it until supper time).
I always talk about how important it is to document real life, in all it’s chaos. But I’ll be honest sometimes my photos aren’t exactly “real”. Yes, I admit it I set up shots sometimes, I rearrange the furniture or put my kids where the light is best. I very often have a vision that I want to create.
So I challenged myself to not set up shots, and to let things happen as they are. And you know what? These photos still make my heart as happy as if I had set up the most perfect scene.
Our Valentine’s Day
It was February 13th, but we decided to make this our Valentine’s Day because daddy would be working the next day. We started the day like any other, with the girls eating a lot of snacks and being silly while brushing their teeth.
They had received a package from their nanny for the holiday so I let them open it early. It was some art supplies, so of course Sofia had to paint her canvas right away and put it up in her room.
I did laundry while Grace got in the way, and then we took the girls out for treats at the Sour Grape, a cool local coffee shop that we always wanted to go to. When we got home, Grace finished writing her name on the valentines for her classmates. She is practicing writing her name and I just love to see how she does it different every time. Then she helped daddy with supper.
It was a normal day, but it was also a special day. I’m very glad that I documented all of it.
This year I have joined a group of photographers to document our days through blog posts on the 10th day of every month. We’ll each be posting 10 images that we took in the previous month. If you’d like to read all of the posts, click the link at the end of this post to continue the loop.
Follow along with the other talented photographers in the group, next up is Moments by Adriana. Make sure you give her and all the other ladies in our loop some love!
