Spectrum Inspired sessions are quickly becoming my favourite sessions to do. There’s just something special about knowing that I am helping families create memories and images that they may not have otherwise had.

On a cool September day, I met Logan and his parents at the Oromocto Wetlands for our session. His mom, Laura had told me some things about him so I knew he would like exploring the trail there. I also knew that it might take him a bit to warm up to me, so I let him lead the way.

“Logan is very kind and loving but also very wild and adventurous,” explained Laura. “He can keep up with the older kids and strives for praise and affection. Logan can very loud and outgoing but in new settings shy and withdrawn.”

They had never been there before so it was a new adventure for all three of them. Logan immediately took off running across the boardwalk, excited to see what lay ahead.

We visited the pond and threw some rocks and then continued on. Logan was super impressed by the giant log. He loved balancing along it and was thrilled when he found a painted rock hidded there.

Time to explore

I just loved watching him come out of his shell. It didn’t take him long to get used to me taking his picture. He was serious and a bit nervous about exploring, but he also wanted to keep going and find more rocks. I’m learning that kids on the Spectrum need time to discover things on their own, with their parents nearby for support. Once he realized there were rocks hidden all along the trail, he was determined to find them all.

“Logan is a loving five-year-old boy with autism. We received the diagnosis in January of 2017,” said Laura. “He loves nature and being outside and is very very busy. Logan is one of a kind and tends to explore the world and everything in it to the extreme. He goes into everything full swing whether it be playing in the mud or painting a new masterpiece.”

By the end of the trail, and our session, Logan had pretty much forgotten I was there. He found lots of rocks and frogs.

I know how hard it can be for families which a child with ASD to have photos taken. Spectrum Inspired Sessions are so rewarding to me, and I hope that every family treasures these wonderful memories.
