I love downtown Fredericton. When I went to St. Thomas University I loved weekends when my friends and I would go to the Farmer’s Market or wander the streets, grabbing a coffee and checking out whatever event happened to be going on. Ok, I admit it, we went to Science East and acted like kids too. I just remember loving the atmosphere and all the little shops.

Flash forward to 2018, I’m living close by and get the idea to shoot some photos downtown. I brought my girls downtown one day and we had a fantastic time. But I was itching to do a downtown session. Up until that point, no one had approached me to do one. It’s probably hard for most people to envision how it would go, especially with kids. But for me, it was easy.

I pictured a family hanging out by the fountain at City Hall (and maybe playing the public piano if it was open), walking along Queen Street and peeking in store windows. If any were open, I could see us checking them out and maybe grabbing a treat.

So I held a model call

I love holding model calls because I get so many applications from amazing families. The common response is that it’s been so long since they had professional photos taken. I love being able to give families a chance to have a session they may never have booked. Plus, I can choose the families that best suit my vision. In this case, I was looking for a family who loved hanging out downtown and had some favourite places.

The family I chose was perfect. The best part of the whole evening was that it was Ella’s fifth birthday! It was such a fun way for them to celebrate and document it.

We did all the things I wanted. We hung out at the fountain, then wandered down the street. Many stores were closed but we found one that was open and it just happened to be one of their favourites. ThinkPlay toy store was the absolute perfect place to go. We (yes, including me), had so much fun testing out toys. Mom and dad even got into it.

Then we went for a walk, along the way stopping to play or make wishes, grab a drink from the water fountain, check out the river. We ended up on a little hidden beach where Ella threw some rocks in the water and found some shells.

This was the perfect session, right down to Ella needing comfort from mom along the way.

I really hope that more people consider booking downtown sessions! There’s so much to do and explore. It’s fun to think outside the box and do something different together as a family. If you would like more info on this type of session, send me a message! I’d love to hear from you :)
